Le Corbusier said “A house is a machine for living”

And what do we all hate most about machines?  When they don’t work!

It is probably the biggest reason people call a Designer, or an Architect or a Builder, because the machine they are living in, the machine they will spend a lifetime paying for, doesn’t work.  Maybe it’s the back up at the front door every time more than one guest arrives, the mess in the mudroom that is really just a hallway with coat hooks, or the feeling of body ‘traffic’ in your own, poorly laid out Kitchen.  Whatever it is that bugs you about your machine, do not think that a different paint color, or a more durable fabric or a different set of bins or baskets will fix it.  We’re talking interior architecture here, it’s what Designers do, it’s what makes the spaces work.  Get the layout, the circulation, the proportion of the room sizes correct before you decorate.

Here are some ideas I’ve seen that make me smile and think, “This house works”

No room for an office? Voila.

Lots of books, no library, no problem.

How about a space for an ‘Adult Time Out’?

Make yourself comfortable, just not where I’m cooking

Harry Potter would have liked this cupboard under the stairs

Who says linen storage needs to be a closet?

Build a better mudroom…and your house will thank you

Just a few examples of utilizing design tools to make spaces work. And they don’t look so bad either!
